What is SAVE?

News

We often talk about the Cobra SAVE method, but do you know what SAVE stands for?

The Cobra SAVE method is a four-step tactical approach to create safer conditions for firefighters while efficiently handling incidents.

By enabling crews to approach without directly exposing themselves to the fire, many risks such as contamination and heat can be avoided.

SAVE can protect health, preserve property, and reduce environmental impact – and it is also an acronym for the four steps: Scan, Attack, Ventilate, and Enter. It is a dynamically applied method, and each step can be used in any order.

  • Scan – gather information from all available sources, using all your senses and experience.
  • Attack – use the information gained to decide which firefighting tactic to apply and where to attack with Cobra.
  • Ventilate – remove smoke and steam to increase visibility.
  • Enter – when the compartment has cooled and ventilation is adequate, it is time to enter.

By adopting new ways to approach fires, we also help firefighters carry out their duties while minimising risks, as well as both short- and long-term health effects.
