Fire in house pellet heating system

Operational Incidents

Pellet heating system fire | Germany, February 2022

On Thursday, February 24th, 2022, at 14:17, a Fire and Rescue Service in Germany was called to a fire in a roof truss.

When the fire brigade arrived at the scene, it was quickly established that there was a fire in the roof of a house. The alarm was caused by an existing pellet heating system. The pellet bunker in the attic had caught fire and could not be extinguished by conventional means.

The fire was difficult to access, so it was decided to use an aerial platform to reach the initial fire.

When the fire had been extinguished, it was clear that the pellets inside the full pellet storage were still smouldering – so the cutting extinguisher was called in to deal with the remaining fire.

Conclusions
  • By cutting through layers of pellets, the initial fire could be reached
  • Easy and flexible use of the extinguisher enabled the operator to effectively reach the seat of the fire
  • A targeted effort could be implemented by using only 60 litres of water per minute
  • The crews did not have to dig out the burning pellets to extinguish them
