Cobra in the Maritime Environment

Cobra cold cut technology is just as effective in a maritime environment on board vessels. The shorter lance enables better manoeuvrability of the nozzle below decks. The system provides multiple capabilities and is constructed using materials to help ensure longer life of the system in a marine setting where sea water is used.

The system still provides the same capability to pierce a compartment, using environmentally friendly coarse filings, to enable a water stream to be entrained into that space, with the added benefits of protecting the firefighting team from heat and fire gases given off from the fire and preventing smoke from entering other areas of the vessel. Reducing these hazards enable the firefighters to enter the compartment more safely when it is time to do so.

The system can also provide greater on board resilience to fixed installations that are either damaged or decommissioned for maintenance, offering the ability to effectively suppress fires where fixed installations are not available. This quick fire suppression facilitates enhanced business continuity as Cobra can reduce both fire and water damage, enabling compartments and their contents to be better protected. Helping to reduce fire and firefighting damage enables compartments to be reclaimed quicker. Fewer people are required to commence a Cobra firefighting attack compared to traditional methods.

Two ways in which Cobra is effective for boundary cooling in a marine/naval environment are:

In vessels and ships made from steel, cooling the fire will limit heat conductivity, and Cobra can reach the fire quicker than any other method.

Light Weight Composite vessels (LWC) are often made of carbon fibre and plastics; this means that the construction may become involved in the fire. In addition, the LWC construction is like a thermos – it will insulate heat/cold. In these cases, traditional boundary cooling from the outside is not effective. Attacking the fire compartment from the outside creates the opportunity to cool the fire gases before the fire starts to consume the LWC material and breaches the construction of the ship.

Using Cobra provides the ability to reach the fire faster with less personnel and less damage, which is crucial in environments with limited space and resources.

Cold Cut Systems can supply naval and maritime units. These are designed and customised for naval and maritime use: manufactured mainly in stainless steel, with marinised engine, high IP-classification, and shockproof engineered, allowing exposure to tough environments. Can be used with saltwater. Ideal as additional resilience to fully installed suppression systems.

Cold Cut Systems has been supplying Cobra systems to customers in the Naval segment since 2006. Among our users are the Royal Swedish Navy, Swedish Coast Guard, Polish Navy, German Havariekommando, Smit Salvage in Rotterdam and Singapore, Switzer Salvage and Zeeland Region in the Netherlands, and MES TOKKI in Japan.
