International Firefighters’ Day first started due to the tragic deaths of five firefighters in Australia in December 1998. Today it has become a globally recognized day to celebrate everyone who serves in the emergency services.
May 4th was chosen in honour of Saint Florian the patron saint of firefighters. St. Florian was a Roman soldier in the 3rd century who was reportedly in charge of a special group of firefighting soldiers. The legend says that St. Florian put out a massive fire with only one bucket of water, saving a village from ruin. St. Florian is also known as the protector of those who have come in danger of fire.
A good way to keep firefighters safe is training. So, a little extra training is a perfect way to celebrate International Firefighters’ Day.
